JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT HELPS YOUTH SUCCEED
Education and employment are two of the keys for youth making the journey into self-sufficient adulthood. Urban Peak provides a program which helps homeless youth find those keys and open the door to a brighter future.

“Learning from the Junior Achievement (JA) program gives youth the skills necessary to obtain and maintain employment,” says Urban Peak Education and Employment Counselor Sarah Eriksen.
Eriksen has taught JA classes to Urban Peak youth since March and already 46 youth have gone through the program!
Students complete two JA courses in the program: Success Skills and Careers with a Purpose. In the Success Skills course, students learn to explore their career goals and dreams and to identify the necessary skills they will need in order to achieve them. The course features lessons on such skills as work-readiness, formal and informal communication, problem solving, conflict resolution,
and even marketing. In the Careers with a Purpose course, students learn about life roles and how to define their own values, as well as the difference between a job and a career with a noble purpose. They also learn how to structure their work world, how to align their values with multiple career choices, the importance of ethics, decision making for a positive future, and much more.

According to Eriksen, “It gives youth the opportunity to learn about career options that they may never have thought about before and lets them plan out goals to reach the educational requirements necessary to reach their career goals.”
