We’re Off to See the Wizard!
For one unforgettable night, the bright lights of The Buell Theatre shined a little brighter—not just for the Tony Award-winning production of The Wiz, but for a group of resilient young people from Urban Peak who were there to witness it.
Lani shared how the story resonated with his own journey. Growing up in the foster care system, he often struggled with belonging and identity. Watching Dorothy and her friends search for courage, love and self-awareness reminded him of his own path. “It reminded me of self-value,” he said. “That I can do all things.”
Without the distractions of phones or electronics, the youth were fully immersed in something new and meaningful. “These outings make me feel like I still matter, no matter what my living situation is,” said Nakiya.
The evening was more than a show—it was a celebration of possibility. For the youth at Urban Peak, it was a moment to feel seen, uplifted and inspired. “It was a nice getaway,” said Lyric, another attendee. “It felt like community.” Thank you to the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, for making this experience available to Urban Peak youth!
